Moirang, June 28 2025:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra has stated that the project to construct temporary houses for those who lost their homes in the ongoing crisis in Manipur remains incomplete, despite the Centre having sanctioned Rs 145 crore for the purpose.
He made the statement while visiting the relief camps set up at Thangjing Sindam Shanglen and Chingu Thangjing Guest House in Moirang Constituency.
Speaking to the media on the sideline, the Congress leader expressed concern that the project to build 3000 houses for internally displaced people (IDPs) whose homes were either torched or flattened during the crisis remains incomplete despite the Centre sanctioning Rs 145 crore for the cause.
While Rs 4.5 crore has also been allocated to install television sets at all relief camps, not all camps have benefited from this initiative, he continued.
Saying that IDPs are still living in miserable conditions at relief camps, he added that these inmates face serious problems accessing medical attention when needed.
He expressed desire for the Government to initiate measures to provide IDPs with free treatment facilities at Government hospitals like RIMS and JNIMS when needed.
Although the Government had sanctioned Rs 11 crore to purchase computer sets for relief camps to facilitate easy document submission for IDPs, the initiative hasn't been implemented yet, Meghachandra claimed.
Continuing that the Government has so far sanctioned Rs 475.06 crore for IDPs, he urged the district administrations to ensure the IDPs receive the benefits from the allocated funds.
To a media query, the Congress leader maintained that the inability of the BJP to form a popular Government despite having 54 MLAs in its support is unfortunate.
He also said it is unlikely Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur, despite speculation, as he hasn't made any concrete statements about the crisis.
He, however, expressed desire for the Prime Minister to visit the State and build confidence among the people, stating it's the Government's responsibility to end the conflict.
Other leaders of MPCC accompanied Meghachandra during the visit.
