Imphal, March 25 2025:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt Ltd saved the life of 33-year old woman from Langol Relief Camp who had accidentally ingested a toothbrush while trying to dislodge a fish bone.
As per a press release, the woman was rushed to the hospital's Emergency Department with severe abdominal pain on March 10 .
Dr Chandragupta Chongtham, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Shija Hospitals, led the medical team through this unusual case.
After the patient arrived, the team conducted an initial evaluation, including a chest X-ray, but the foreign object wasn't immediately visible.
On the same day, an attempt to remove the toothbrush endoscopically under local anesthesia was made.
However, due to its smooth, elongated shape, the toothbrush proved difficult to grasp with standard forceps, making the procedure challenging.
The next day, the team decided to proceed with a more invasive approach under general anesthesia.
Dr Chandragupta and his team successfully removed the toothbrush from the patient's stomach via endoscopy.
The patient remained stable throughout the recovery process and was discharged in good health later that same day.
