Imphal, September 09 2025:
Students of Government Polytechnic College staged aprotest today by locking the college gate, demanding the immediate filling of vacant teaching posts.
During the protest, the students held placards with inscriptions such as "No action on our earlier demands force us to protest again", "Fill vacancies" and "Save education" among others.
Speaking to the media, finance secretary of Government Polytechnic Students' Union Wareen P Kamei stated that the college, which requires a minimum of 60 teachers, has been functioning with only 21 teachers for a long time, prompting the student protest.
Saying that the existing teachers are overburdened, with some handling two to three subjects, which affects their workload and efficiency, he added that the college's lack of support staff, such as a chowkidar, adds to the teachers' workload.
He also pointed out that the absence of a chowkidar has compromised campus security, allowing unauthorized individuals, often addicts, to enter the premises.
Moreover, the college has experienced cases of vehicle theft, further underscoring the need for adequate security measures, he said.
Reminding that they had submitted a memorandum to the Governor on August 1 to fill vacant teaching and nonteaching staff posts, he expressed disappointment that no concrete action has been taken so far to address the issue.
In light of the authorities' inaction, the students decided to lock the college gate, he added.
Notably, the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) had issued notices to the relevant Government officials, seeking their response and action plan to address several issues at the Government Polytechnic at Takyelpat such as shortage of teachers and staff, lack of a safe hostel for girl students and frequent theft of vehicles and equipment by September 18 .
