Imphal, August 10 2025:
The Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) on Monday launched a mass campaign demanding the inclusion of the Meeteis in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list of the Indian Constitution, and calling for conduct of census after the deportation of all illegal immigrants from Manipur.
The mass campaign was launched by MMTU in association with Arambai Tenggol and Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) at the Universal Friendship Library Club, Lamboi Khongnangkhong, Imphal West on Sunday.
The launch function held under the banner "Deport Illegal Immigrants before Census and Restore Schedule Tribe Status of Meetei/Meitei" was attended by social worker Khoingamba Khuman, Village Volunteer Force vice president (administration) Sarangthem Surendra, UFO general secretary Meiraba Angomcha, Uripok Apunba Lup president Soram Tikendrajit and MMTU president Salam Gourakishore as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, secretary (administration) Mutum Churamani highlighted that MMTU, along with various other organisations, has been pressing authorities concerned for over 14 years to include the Meetei/ Meitei in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list of the Indian Constitution to ensure constitutional safeguards.
He said various forms of agitations and campaigns have been launched over the years.
However, the demand remains unfulfilled to this day.
Reflecting on the government plan for carrying out delimitation of assembly constituencies in the state from 2026, he emphasised that as the delimitation process requires census data, it should be conducted based on accurate figures.
In the case of Manipur, the census reportsof 2001 and 2011 are riddled with errors.
Moreover, the issue of illegal immigrants remains a major challenge for the state.
Therefore, it would not be appropriate to proceed with the delimitation process until all errors in the census reports are rectified for unblemished data, he added.
Churamani further clarified that the MMTU is not opposed to the conduct of delimitation, but is against the same based on inaccurate census data.
He said the process should only be initiated after the deportation of illegal immigrants and the preparation of accurate and reliable census figures.
He urged the Governor and the chief secretary to send recommendations to the central government in this regard at the earliest.
