Thoubal, June 09 2025:
The family of Asem Kanan-who was recently arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) - has vehemently rejected the charges levelled against him, calling them "false and baseless" .
In an exclusive interview with this daily, the family expressed deep dissatisfaction over the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the lack of transparency from both investigating agencies and elected representatives.
Kanan's wife Bimolini, described the charges against her husband as "malicious", and criticised the conflicting statements issued by the CBI and the Governor.
"The CBI says one thing, and the Governor another.
Please do not believe in such false accusations," she said.
Urging the public to support her in this difficult time, she appealed for help considering the welfare of their two daughters and one son.
She also requested the public to endure the inconveniences caused by the ongoing bandh and blockades related to the arrest, and called for the unconditional release of her husband.
Kanan's mother, Asem Ibetombi, also expr essed her dismay at what she called "grave injustice".
According to her, Kanan was apprehended on June 7 around 8 pm near RIMS.
However, the CBI stated in its press release that he was arrested on June 8 around 8 pm from Imphal Airport.
"This clearly indicates there is no truth or justice in what is being presented," she alleged.
Referring to the MLAs' meeting with the Governor, Ibetombi said the Governor attempted to clarify that Kanan's arrest was not related to his affiliation with the AT but was linked to another case.
Ibetombi also expressed disappointment that the legislators failed to share any substantial information with the public following the meeting, and instead, appeared, to downplay the agitation.
"It is unfortunate that the MLAs didn't address the inconsistencies in the CBI's statement, especially its reference to AT connection," she said.
Stating that she will not feel guilty if her son is genuinely found guilty, Ibetombi maintained that, as of now, there has been no fair and transparent process.
She made an emotional plea to civil society organisations, Meira Paibi groups and the public to stand with her family and support their demand for Kanan's unconditional release.
While acknowledging the current fragile state of the Meetei community, she said: "As a mother, I share the pain of the people.
I urge everyone to come together and help secure justice" .
