Imphal, June 22 2022:
DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyanba has urged the government to reserve 25 per cent seat for students from the disadvantaged families in private schools of the state from the current academic calendar to ensure free and compulsory education as enshrined under the Right to Education Act, 2009.Speaking during an awareness and human chain formation programme held on Wednesday at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur as part of the Campaign for Disturbance Free Education Zone undertaken by Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand, Lamyanba, who is also the Committee's convener, noted that despite yearly increase of Rs 2.5 crore in the budget allocation for education, there has been no significant improvement in government schools.
As per the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), the rate of enrolment in government schools in Manipur has declined by 13 percent from the earlier 26 per cent, while the state has the highest rate of students per population studying in private schools in whole of India.
This shows that government schools have not been able to impart quality education, he pointed.
Lamyanba continued that considering the weak socio economic condition of the state and inability of the government schools to provide quality education, the state government should take up plans for making 25 per cent reservation out of the total capacity of seats in private schools of the state for free education of students from weaker sections of the society as per RTE Act.
As part of the programme, students of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School held placards and shouted slogans for implementation of RTE Act in private schools, make educational institutions disturbance free area, uproot corruption from the education sector, uphold environment conducive for education, etc.
