Imphal, December 12 2023:
Pangal Students' Union (PSU), Dhanamanjuri University has urged the state government to rectify a historical oversight concerning the brave Pangal women who actively participated in the Nupi Lal of 1939.In a release, PSU Dhanamanjuri University pointed out that the official list commemorating the women's uprising of 1939 has failed to recognise the significant contributions made by Pangal women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel in Imphal.
The apparent indifference and injustice to these brave mothers is not just an oversight but an affront to their sacrifice and stain on our shared history, it said.
"We bring to light the valour of those Pangal women who faced imprisonment for their role in demolishing the Kasturi Godown.
It is a matter of shame and unacceptability that, for the past 80 years, these courageous women have been overlooked," the release said, while urging authorities concerned to rectify the historical blunder, to be inclusive, and to recognise the invaluable contributions of these brave mothers.
The Pangal women who were jailed for destroying the Kasturi store were Sara Bibi, wife of Nur Ali, from Khergao Sabal Lekai; Tombi Bibi, wife of Ibrahim; and Shajoubi Bibi, wife of Nurali from Khetri Awang Leikei along with 28 other Pangal women involved in the incident that took place on December 12, 1939, the release informed.
