Kuki militants launch fresh offensive

Imphal, July 09 2023:
Day after a farmer, a police com-mando and a teenager were injured in attacks in Bishnupur district, armed Kuki militants launched fresh offensive at multiple locations including a sev-en kilometre stretch from Kangchup Chingkhong to Haraothel in Imphal West district.
The large scale attack on Meetei villages along the Kangchup hill range started from around 9 pm by Kuki militants using sophisticated weapons and mortar shells.
The attacks were carried out in Kangchup Chingkhong, Kangchup Gel-jang, Singda, Kadangband and Haraothel areas.
Village volunteers also retaliated consequently leading to fierce gunfight in these areas.
There are reports of some injuries but no confirmation could be made at the time of filing this report.
Security forces have also rushed into these areas to control the situation.
Earlier, around 5.30 pm, exchange of gunshots were reported in Khoijumantabi, Laingoubi and Langza village areas.
Source said that Kuki militants used mortar shells to attack on Meetei villagers.
However, there is no report of any injuries or casualties.
Similarly, Kuki militants fired several rounds of gun-shots in Sabungkhok area, which was retaliated by Meetei village volunteers.
However, there is no report of further gunfights in the area.
According to a report, the Kuki militants fired a mor-tal shell, suspected to be of 81mm, from atop Chinglen-mei Ching to marshal Ching, Khoijumantabi around 9.30 am Sunday.
The mortar shell flew for over half-a-kilo-metre before striking and exploding at the hill slope.
