VVIP/VIP escorts to guard farmers: IGP Muivah

Expressing concern over the life threatening sit-uation faced by farmers due to the current crisis in the state, the police department has tak-en up measures to providese-curity protection to farmers by utilising security escorts of VVIPs/VIPs and officers, according to IGP (A/Panel tips) IK Muivah on Saturday.
Addressing a press confer-ence at the police headquarters here on Saturday, IGP Muivah said that a security meeting chaired by chief minister N Biren has decided to reduce number of security escorts from VVIPs/VIPs and senior officers of the government, and utilise them for providing security protection to farmers.
The department has de-ployed 1847 security personnel including home guards and SURF in five valley districts of the state where most of the farmlands are located and fac-ing threats from armed attacks from the nearby hills.
Most of the security personnel are from IRB and MR except for around 200 from different units such as SDFR, telecom and home guardsamong others.
Of them, 846 are deployed in Imphal West, 389 in Imphal East, 273 in Bishnupur, 147 in Thoubal and 192 in Kakching districts.
Ad-ditional forceiwill be deployed as per situation, he added Area of deployment will be chalked out by respective DCs, SPs and district agricul-tural officers, he said.
He also appealed to farmers not to enter sensitive area without giving prior information to the district SP through local body leaders.
