Imphal, May 30 2025:
AICC Minority Department national coordinator and Manipur in-charge Rajesh Kumar Sethi launched a scathing attack on the BJP over its efforts to reclaim power in the state, accusing the party of placing "power over peace" and "control over consensus".
Briefing the media at Congress Bha-wan, here, on Friday, Rajesh Sethi criticised BJP's attempt to form a government following the resignation of the chief minister after a no-confidence motion was planned by the Congress-led opposition.
"For two long years, Manipur has been engulfed in violence, mistrust, and unimaginable suffering, all under the watch of the BJP government," he said, adding that over 200 lives were lost, more than 60,000 people displaced, and places of worship and homes destroyed.
Despite this, he said, "the chief minister clung to power as if nothing had happened" .
Rajesh Sethi asserted that the resignation was "not an act of moral responsibility, but one of political compulsion".
He maintained that even under President's Rule, the situation in Manipur remains grim.
"The wounds of Manipur continue to fester.
People are still waiting for justice, reconciliation, and peace.
Yet shockingly, BJP is once again plotting to reclaim power through backdoor deals and political manipulation, instead of allowing the people of Manipur to speak through fresh elections".
Calling BJP's move 'a betrayal of democracy', he said, "This reveals BJP's true priority: power over peace, control over consensus" .
Urging immediate action, the Manipur in-charge demanded that the Government of India and the Election Commission dissolve the current Assembly and announce fresh elections.
"The people of Manipur deserve a legitimate, representative government that can bring communities together and restore normalcy," he pointed out.
"Democracy cannot be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency.
