Human Rights Day observed across state

Imphal, December 10 2023:
Different institutions and organisations observed the International Human Rights Day 2023 in different parts of the state on Sunday.
Manipur University (MU), Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education, and Department of Law jointly organised the observance under the theme 'Freedom, Equality and Justice for All' at MU court hall with MU vice-chancellor professor N Lokendra and Department of Law head Dr Y Premananda as chief guest and president respectively.
Former advocate general of Assam and retired dean of Gauhati University professor Romeshchandra Borpatra Gohain, former member of Manipur Human Rights Commission Ng Nongyai and MU School of Social Science dean professor Th Purnima were also present at the event as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, professor N Lokendra recalled the history of International Human Rights Day as adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948 .
The theme of this year suits the current situation besieging the state, which has been embroiled in ethnic conflict for the last seven months.
One can understand the situation in the state from international and national narratives, Lokendra said.
Taking advantage of the event, he also disclosed that a new building for the Department of Law and Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education of the university was recently inaugurated with the objective to expand the scope of human rights study in the university.
Professor Romeshchandra Borpatra Gohain talked on the theme as resource person.
LMS Law College, Imphal also observed the day at the conference hall of the college with High Court of Manipur senior advocate and Bar Council of Manipur chairman S Brajabihari, senior advocate Ch Narenndra and LMS Law College principal Dr N Pramod as members of the dais.
Speaking on the occasion, professor N Pramod emphasised the need to uphold rights of the common people amid the humanitarian crisis in the state.
World Human Rights Protection Organisation (WHR-PO), Manipur State Unit also observed the day at Manipur Press Club with WHRPO international chairman Dr Loijinglen Chingsanglakpa Nameirakpam and state president Moirangthem Sorojini Leima as chief guest and president respectively.
Federation of Civil Societies (FOCS) president Th Manihar, United Mothers' Organisation (UMO) advisor Dr Konjengbam Sushila, Indigenous People's Organisation Manipur IPOM) vice-president Kh Chandramani Khumancha, World Meetei Council (WMC) advisor Dr K Muktasana, and Yelhoumee Kanba Lup (YKL) president Loken Angom were also present at the observance as guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering in the context of the on-going ethnic violence, Th Manihar contended that not much could be expected from the Central and state governments.
The state government has been rendered powerless and in such situation, it is up to the people to defend themselves against the aggression by Chin-Kuki people through a united approach, he stressed.
Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Manipur and Human Rights Council (HRC) Manipur also observed the day at Manipur Press Club, here with All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Bijoy Kakchingtabam and HRD Manipur chairman Joy Chingakham as chief guest and president respectively while Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) chairman Keisham Pradipkumar and HRC Manipur advisor Dr Yumnam Ranbir were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Joy Chingakham expressed concern over the protracted humanitarian crisis in the state and violation of human rights.
HRD Manipur had raised complaint against the violation of rights by Chin-Kuki-Zo militants to different international forums, he said while conveying that the Meetei community does not want conflict or war but is for peace and unity, which the organisation is also propagating.
Meanwhile, Indigenous People's Organisation Manipur (IPOM) observed the day under the theme 'Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future' at Thamnapokpi Ibudhou Thangjing Laibung, Bishnupur district on Sunday.
Former acting chairman of Manipur Human Rights Commission Khaidem Mani and IPOM president advocate Y Debadutta attended the commemorative event as chief guest and president respectively while MU Department of Mathematics professor M Premjit, Kumbi College associate professor L Gopal, Ningthoukhong Meira Paibi Lup leader RK Leima and New Life Foundation secretary Dr L Pishak were guests of honour.
All Manipur Lady Advocates' Association (AMLAA) and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Imphal West too jointly observed the International Human Rights Day at Cheirap Court Complex, Imphal on Sunday.
All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) president Puyam Tomcha, AMLAA president Chanambam Kiranbala and Bar Council of Manipur member Naorem Binodini attended the observance as presidium members while advocate Laishram Rebeda and AMBA vice-president Nambam Manikanta reflected on essence and significance of the observance as the resource persons.
