Imphal, December 10 2023:
Stating that the issue of abuse of rights of drug users in Manipur has reached a critical point with reports of discrimination, violence, .and neglect cropping up frequently, Manipur Users Collective (MUC) has pointed out the need for authorities to recognise and address these violations promptly to uphold the principles of human rights.
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, MUC, in a release, flagged concern over the alarming and widespread human rights abuses faced by drug users in the state.
It also honoured those who lost their lives in the ethnic violence raging since May 3, 2023 and shared the grief and sorrow of the bereaved family.
Despite seriousness of the crisis, drug use across the state is not being affected in terms of consumption rather it is getting aggravated with uninterrupted supply and thus leading to violation of human rights under the guise of rehabilitation and treatment, the release said while adding that gravity of the situation demands immediate attention and action to safeguard the rights and dignity of these individuals as most of them are in the reformative age group.
"We call upon both local and national authorities to investigate and rectify instances of abuse, ensuring accountability for those responsible," MUC said, while pointing out the need for a comprehensive and compassionate approach to tackle the root causes of drug abuse, focusing on rehabilitation and harm reduction rather than punitive measures.
"The government should intensify campaign for eradication of poppy plantation too.
It is high time that all drug use issues are acknowledged as a health problem rather than as moral discrepancy issue," it said and suggested that consulting and engaging people/institution who/which are meaningfully involved with it will make the entire drug use related response a pragmatic, efficient and judicious approach.
The release further called upon the international community to stand in solidarity with the affected individuals and advocate for protection of their basic human rights.
