Steps taken up to deal with rabies: Director

Citing increase in rabies cases in parts of Churachandpur district, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services director Rk Khogendrajit has informed that the Department has taken up all necessary measures to prevent the spread of the same.
In a press meet held at the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry office, Sanjenthong on Monday, Khogendrajit said that following the surge in rabies cases in Churachandpur, a meeting of joint directors and deputy directors of the Department was held at the office.
He continued that dogs and cats, when infected with rabies, have a 100 per cent mortality rate.
However, it is preventable by vaccinating both humans and animals in time.
Thus, there is no need for the public to panic.
Rabies often occurs during warmer seasons i.e., in April and from May to June.
With reports of rabies cases in Churachandpur, the officials of the Department had strengthened the anti-rabies vaccine drives and awareness campaigns, he informed.
Khogendrajit further said that the department has set up control room (Mobile no -8837416696) for Churachandpur district and Rapid Response Team (RRT) formed to look into the immediate needs.
Instructions have been given to all veterinary staff under the joint director to help control the spread of the disease.
Officials of departments concerned in other districts have also been instructed to submit daily vaccination and awareness reports apart from Chandel and Bishnupur districts put on alert, he added.
Urging dog and cat owners to prevent their pets from mingling with outdoor animals or strays, the director further requested owners not to let their pets out of their homes.
The department has been providing free vaccines for rabies, brucellosis, black quarter, haemorrhagic septicaemia, Lumpy skin disease, classical swine fever, PPR and foot and mouth diseases, and as such, appealed to owners and farmers to get their animals vaccinated to prevent against the diseases.
Khogendrajit then said that as per the information provided by Churachandpur district veterinary officer through the media regarding the shortage of anti-rabies vaccine, the vaccines have been transported to the district on Monday.
Quick response teams have been formed and dispatched to affected areas of Vaal Veng, Ngathal, Hmar Veng, Zoumunnuam and Zenhang Lamka.
So far, around 4469 dogs have been administered anti-rabies vaccines, he informed.
