Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) and Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup (UNAL) have mounted pressure on the MLAs to break their silence and take immediate necessary steps to form a government, stating that the absence of a democratically elected government has directly led to the ongoing crackdowns and deteriorating situation in the state.
Addressing a joint press conference held at UAL office at Uripok Sorbon Thingel on Monday, UAL general secretary Samom Dhruba said that the recent arrest of Arambai Tenggol (AT) members, including its fighting commander Asem Kanan, is extremely unfortunate and detrimental to the peace process.
Asserting that AT had voluntarily surrendered arms following an understanding with the Governor to help restore peace and normalcy, he also pointed out that AT members played a crucial role during the recent floods by rescuing and evacuating flood-affected individuals.
He condemned the arrests of AT members, asserting that such actions would only hamper the efforts to bring normalcy to the state.
Dhruba then demanded that the government stop targeting public volunteers who have come forward to assist the people during times of crisis.
He further criticised the MLAs for not taking responsibility, stressing that instead of remaining silent, they should form a popular government at the earliest.
"It is highly unfortunate that the MLAs are citing lack of approval from the Centre as an excuse to delay government formation, " he rued and warned that the public's growing resentment could eventually be directed at the MLAs themselves if they continue to delay the government formation, UAL and UNAL also endorse the 10-day bandh called by Arambai Tenggol, he conveyed, appealing to the bandh supporters to ensure safe passage for essential services, including religious obligations and healthcare.
Highlighting the critical importance of Uripok route, which is used frequently by ambulances and patients, Dhruba urged that the area must not be blocked to avoid endangering lives.
Meanwhile, UAL vice-president Kh Tarunkumar strongly condemned the recent assault on journalists by security personnel and appealed to both security forces and bandh supporters to allow journalists to carry out their duties without fear, obstruction or interference.
Tarunkumar also emphasised that any arrests made by security forces must adhere strictly to constitutional procedures.
"This includes the use of an arrest memo, informing the family with proper reasons for the arrest, and producing the arrested individuals before a magistrate within 24 hours," he maintained.
Expressing concern over the frequent imposition of internet bans during times of unrest, he said that the restrictions severely affect students and the general population.
He then urged the government to lift the current internet ban, stating that it is counterproductive and causes, unnecessary hardship to people.
