MU Zoology Department releases 53 checkered keelback hatchlings in Toubul

Imphal, June 26 2026:
In a major success for reptile conservation, the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, released 53 hatchlings of the Checkered Keelback (Fowlea piscator), locally called Lilabob, near Yawa Lamjao, Toubul, Bishnupur on Friday.
The release was carried out in the presence of Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Dean, School of Life Sciences, Manipur University, and Romabai Waikhom, Divisional Forest Officer Bishnupur, along with members of Wildlife Explorers Manipur, Green Brigade Toubul, and research scholars from the Department of Zoology, Manipur University.
An adult female snake was rescued from Toubul by Elangbam Premjit Singh and brought to MU for study.
It laid 58 eggs the same day.
After examination, the mother was released.
The eggs were artificially incubated by researchers.
Of 54 fertile eggs, 53 hatched after 68 days, marking a high success rate.
The effort was led by research scholar Nongthombam Hemeshwor Singh with Jenishkumar Thingujam.
Borish Loushambam, and Dr Sorokhaibam Mexico Singh under Prof N Mohilal Meitei.
The non-venomous freshwater snake is vital for wetland ecosystems.
The department thanked stakeholders and reaffirmed its commitment to wildlife conservation and public awareness.
