Bishnupur, July 11 2026:
A native tree plantation drive was conducted on Saturday at the summit of Thanga Chingjao Hillock as part of efforts to promote ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation.
The programme was jointly organised by the Loktak Folklore Museum (LFM), Thanga Tongbram, Panathabam, and the Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur.
According to a statement issued by SfF, the drive began with the ceremonial planting of "Uningthou" (Phoebe hainesiana), the State Tree of Manipur.
The inaugural plantation was jointly carried out by Loktak Folklore Museum founder Tongbram Ahongjao and Sangai First Foundation vice-president Kumam Jugeshor.
Members of the Loktak Folklore Museum and trustees of the Sangai First Foundation later planted a variety of indigenous tree saplings across the hilltop to help restore native forest ecosystems and preserve the ecological balance of the Loktak Lake region.
The organisers said the initiative aims to conserve the ecologically important hillock ecosystem surrounding Loktak Lake, encourage the regeneration of indigenous tree species and promote the conservation of Uningthou, popularly known as the "King of Timber" in Manipur.
It also seeks to raise environmental awareness among the younger generation and encourage their participation in protecting the State's natural heritage.
The organisers expressed gratitude to Tourangbam Brajakumar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, for providing healthy Uningthou saplings that contributed to the successful conduct of the plantation drive.
