Imphal, September 08 2025:
The Kom Tribe Organisation Valley (KTOV) has urged all concerned to refrain from misusing the traditional attire of the Kom community.
Speaking to media persons today at Kom Leikai, Sangaiprou, KTOV executive member Ajay Kom emphasized that the Kom traditional dress is not just a garment but a cultural symbol with historical and mythological roots, believed to date back to a time when men and gods were connected.
He asserted that the Kom community has distinct traditional dresses worn for different occasions, such as weddings, funerals, religious ceremonies, and other celebrations.
He also highlighted the sacred Pasepon (men's attire) which was woven for the first time by Pi Chongnu Kom, inspired by the patterns of a (Lairen) snake's skin.
He mentioned that the cloth is considered sacred and is reserved for funerals of prominent elders and 'Ningthou', or for the occasion of 'Ningthou Pham Kaba' .
"There is also the Posepon Ammte, designed by taking some patterns from the Posepon, which is used for dances, songs and festival", he added.
Voicing concern over modification of Kom community's traditional attire and wrongful claims made by other groups, Ajay said, "We do not oppose others wearing out traditional dress, but it must be used with respect, dignity, and understanding".
Furthermore, Ajay Kom urged all concerned to give proper respect to the distinct traditional attire of the Kom community as it is a vital part of their cultural heritage, identity, and history.
