Imphal, May 07 2025:
Different teams of Education (Schools) Department, Manipur Police and Traffic Police will carry out inspection of vehicles engaged in transportation of students from Thursday onwards to ensure that such vehicles are adhering to regulations prescribed by the state government.
According to director (education-S) Ng Bhogendra, commercial vehicles transporting students beyond their capacity not only violate rules framed by the state government but also increase risk of accidents.
To prevent unwanted incidents, the state government had already issued gazette notification for certain rules to be followed by commercial vehicles transporting students, particularly school vans and buses.
He, however, noted that many school vans and buses are still seen transporting students in violation of the rules already specified.
To solve the issue with mutual understanding of stakeholders, inspections of vehicles carrying students will start from Thursday onwards by visiting schools in valley districts which, Bhogendra said, will be an appeal to follow rules framed specifically for studenttransporters.
"There will be no raid or seizure of vehicles during the inspection but discussions will be held with school authorities, transporters and parent associations for addressing the issue," he informed.
Addressing media persons at education (S) office at Babupara Wednesday, Ng Bhogendra said there had been numerous incidents where commercial vehicles carrying students beyond their capacity were involved in accidents, resulting in injuries to students.
At the same time, he highlighted the disturbing trend of students under 18 years of age, who do not possess driving licences, often riding two-wheelers with two pillion riders.
"Such students not only violate traffic rules but also pose a danger on the road," he noted.
Elaborating on the inspection to be carried out from Thursday, Ng Bhogendra informed that different teams comprising officials from Education (S) Department, ZEOs, SPs and Traffic Police will visit schools in the valley districts.
Though some parents use own vehicle to drop/pick up their children to/from schools, majority of students are transported by either vans or buses, said the director, adding that the inspection will prioritise commercial vehicles to ensure strict compliance with the rules framed by the government.
"The inspection is will be carried out to understand the ground realities and to consult with school authorities, transporters and parents' association to find a solution," he added.
