Imphal, May 30 2025:
In the latest political development in the state, 25 BJP legislators convened a joint meeting on Friday evening at the official residence of Thongju MLA Th Biswajit near Sanjenthong.
The meeting, which continued for two hours, deliberated on the Gwaltabi incident, growing public discontent with President's Rule, and party's failure to form a popular government amid the ongoing crisis.
Following the meeting, the MLAs issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the protracted crisis in the state.
"We feel and share the enormous suffering endured by the people of Manipur over the past two years.
As elected representatives, we are united in our firm belief that a long-term solution to the crisis is both possible and necessary," the statement read.
The MLAs stressed that any resolution must be built on "political will, inclusive dialogue, constitutional safeguards, and impartial enforcement of law and order".
They emphasised the need for close cooperation between the Centre, the state, civil society and community leaders.
As part of the deliberations, the legislators discussed setting up a neutral dialogue platform to promote constructive mediation between the Meetei and Kuki-Zo communities.
"We strongly support the establishment of a neutral dialogue platform...aimed at building trust and consensus on critical issues," the statement said.
They also explored the idea of formally requesting the Governor and Central leadership to appoint a neutral peace envoy or a panel of eminent persons from both within and outside the state to act as mediators.
The MLAs stated that such a body, supported by both the union government and state administration, could play a vital role in bridging the trust deficit among communities.
Reiterating the importance of inter-community engagement, the MLAs called for grassroots people-to-people dialogue involving local bodies, civil society groups, student organisations and religious leaders to help rebuild trust and foster peaceful coexistence.
On the law and order front, the legislators expressed concern over the operational limitations of the current administrative setup.
They called for central paramilitary and state forces to function with "strict neutrality" and reiterated the urgency of recovering looted weapons and disarming both hills and valley regions.
Acknowledging the "deep public desire" for a popular government, the MLAs discussed viable" pathways to achieve it.
"We resolved to put aside personal ambitions in the larger interest of the state, its people, and the vision of the BJP and its alliance partners in Manipur," they said, committing themselves to peace, justice, and communal harmony.
Meanwhile, one of the MLAs who attended the meeting said that all BJP legislators will reconvene at the party's office on Saturday at 11 am to further deliberate on the current political impasse and explore immediate options to form a government.
