Imphal, January 13 2026:
Continuing its recent commemorative initiative to highlight Manipur's role in India's freedom struggle, the Egalitarian Manipur of the Altruists (EMA) Trust, Manipur, on Sunday deposited a commemorative painting of historical significance at the historic Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The initiative follows the Trust's recent commemorative effort at Mount Manipur and seeks to underscore the deep and enduring historical bond between Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This connection dates back to the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, after which 23 freedom fighters from Manipur were among the earliest revolutionaries exiled by the British to the Andamans.
Many of them were later imprisoned at the Cellular Jail, which stands as a powerful symbol of colonial repression and national resistance.
The commemorative painting artistically portrays the historical, emotional, and cultural ties between Manipur and the Andamans.
It is intended to serve as an educational and inspirational medium, particularly for the younger generation, by highlighting a lesser-known chapter of India's national freedom movement.
Speaking on the occasion, Premkumar.
a representative of EMA Trust stated that "the Cellular Jail is not merely a monument, but a living testament to the indomitable spirit of India's freedom fighters.
Through this commemorative painting, EMA Trust pays homage to their sacrifices and reaffirms its commitment to preserving India's historical and cultural heritage".
The Trust stated that the initiative is non-commercial and aims to promote historical awareness, national integration, and cultural remembrance.
EMA Trust aso expressed its sincere gratitude to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the Cellular Jail authorities for their cooperation and support in preserving this shared heritage.
