Courage of Manipuri women unique: Rami Desai

Writer cum anthropologist Rami Niranjan Desai has said that the role of Manipuri women for the society is enormous and significant and the courage and strength of Manipuri women unique when compared with women of other states.
Rami Niranjan Desai took part in a commemorative event of Nupi Lal organised by Nupi Delhi at the sports ground of Delhi University, North campus on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering at the event which was held with a half-marathon on the theme 'Run for Unity of Manipur', Rami Niranjan Desai lauded the role played by Manipur women arid said that Manipuri women took immense responsibility for the society politically, socially and economically apart from looking after house-hold chores.
In both the Nupi Lal in the history of Manipur, women played crucial role and their courage and strength as shown in the past still remains intact and this makes Manipur shine in the contemporary world.
Journalist Sonia Sorensangbam of Poknapham daily, who attended the event as special guest, said that organising Nupi Lal commemorative event in the national capital for the first time in a big way will help in creating more awareness among the mainland people about the role played by Manipur for the nation.
She said that role played by women amidst the present conflict in Manipur is very similar to what they did during the Nupi Lal in 1904 and 1939.In the present conflict, more women suffered injuries than in both the Nupi Lal but never ran away from the conflict zones, she said, while reminding the courage of Manipuri women during the attempted march up to Torbung Bangla.
She said that more than 100 women were injured in the excessive actions of the security forces at Phougakchao Ikhai when the womenfolk tried to march up to Torbung Bangla but none of the women ran away.
She also expressed hope that women will continue to take responsibility for the society in Manipur socially, economically and politically in future as well.
The event was also attended by veteran singer Naba Volcano, folksinger Mangka Mayanglambam, actor Soma Laishram and historian Malem Ningthouja among others.
