Huge cache of arms recovered

A huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered Friday by a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and 28 Assam Rifles at the foot hills of Awaching, on the western side of the Nongmaiching hill near Uran Chiru village under Irilbung police station, Imphal East district.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (Ops), Imphal East district, M.Rajen Singh in a press meet stated that acting on specific information from a reliable source that some armed militants are moving in the area, a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and 28 Assam Rifles launched a combing operation along the hill slopes of Awaching at around 6:30 a.m.While searching the area, a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered.

They were wrapped in polythene bags and hidden in a pit under the ground near a group of pine trees on the foot hill of Awaching, about one and half kilometer short of Uran Chiru village, said the ASP.
The recovered arms include one G - 3 rifles with magazines, one Chinese made hand grenade, one HE - 56 hand grenade, 3 Lethod shells, 52 live rounds of AK assault rifle ammunition, 28 live rounds of M - 16 ammunition, 15 live rounds of .32 USM carbine ammunition, one magazine of AF series rifle, 3 magazine of 9mm pistol, one I - COM high frequency wireless set, a nine feet long piece of Chinese made cordex wire and 3 electronic detonator, said the police source.
The combined team led by the ASP M.Rajen conducted combing operation in the general area of Uran Chiru village, Awaching, and Sanlangshemba Maring village, but no arrest have been made during the operation.
The ASP stated that it could not confirmed to which group the arms belonged to as the area is operated by different militant groups, and added that the sustained counter insurgency operation conducted with heavy deployment of security forces might have compelled the militant outfit to hide the arms and ammunition in the area.
