Imphal, March 01 2026:
Residents of the Namthanpung Sanj enthong Leikai area are on edge as a damaged retaining wall along the Imphal River threatens to unleash devastation with the onset of monsoon.
The retaining wall, constructed just five to six months ago, has sustained significant damage, including large cracks and sagging sections of the adjacent road, reportedly due to recent riverbed clearing work.
Speaking to the media, Kumar Kom, secretary of the Namthanpung Village Authority, expressed deep dissatisfaction, stating that officials had promised repairs but have yet to take action.
"Last year's floods caused crores in damage; this year's could be worse", said Kumar while adding that if the wall fails, not only the Namthanpung area but also the Chief Secretary's quarters and nearby Porompat areas in the Imphal East District could be inundated.
Kumar further urged the Government to urgently repair the road and retaining wall, warning that the community is sitting on a time bomb- a single monsoon downpour could unleash chaos.
