Imphal, February 26 2026:
A four-day Experiential Learning Training on "Ecological Niche Modelling for Prediction of Habitat Suitability of Forest Trees" commenced today at the Department of Forestry, Manipur University.
The programme aims to provide participants with hands-on experience in using ecological modeling techniques to predict suitable habitats for forest tree species.
The inaugural session was graced by Prof M Damayanti Devi, Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences, as the chief guest.
She emphasized the critical importance of ecological niche modeling in forest conservation and the sustainable management of biodiversity within Manipur.
Prof M Premjit Singh, Registrar of Manipur University, highlighted the necessity of integrating modem computational tools into forest restoration efforts to strengthen research and policy-making.
Dr Vivek Vaishanav, Head (i/c) of the Department of Forestry, outlined the training objectives and encouraged active participation in the practical sessions to gain deeper insights into habitat suitability prediction techniques.
A total of 78 participants from 26 States across the country are attending the training, with 18 in-person attendees and 60 participating online.
The programme structure includes interactive lectures, field demonstrations, and computer-based exercises to equip participants with the necessary skills for applying ecological niche modeling in real-world forestry and conservation projects.
The training is organised as a Science Social Responsibility Initiative by Dr Kangujam Premkumar Singh (ANRF-NPDF) and Neekee Thangjam (DST-WISE Woman Scientist).
The event marks a significant step toward enhancing research capabilities in forest ecology and management at a national level.
