COVID cases rise to eight; Ministry advises vaccine drive

Three more COVID-19 cases were detected on Saturday, raising the total number of active cases in Manipur to eight.
Of the three new cases, two are from Imphal West and one from Imphal East.
The new variant spreading in the country is a sub-variant of omicron.
The samples which have tested positive in Manipur would be sent to another state for genome sequencing to identify the exact variant, official sources said.
The symptoms exhibited by positive cases in the state are not alarming.
The symptoms of this new wave are mostly cold, fever, cough, throat pain, breathing issues and loss of smell and taste.
Of the eight positive cases, one has been hospitalised and the remaining seven are under home isolation.
The department is carrying out further contact tracing.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory to all states to carry out COVID vaccination drives in connection with the new wave.
As per the advisory, the variant currently spreading in the country is showing only mild symptoms.
According to a report, a total of 16,49,699 people ranging from age 12 to 60 years of age have been vaccinated with the first dose of COVID vaccine till April 30, 2024, while 13,39,315 vaccinated with the second dose.
Around 2,80,468 have received the precautionary dose.
As such, around 32,69,452 people have been vaccinated in the state till date.
The advisory urged for co-morbid patients and elderly patients to avoid crowded places and poorly ventilated areas; for doctors, paramedics, other health care workers, patients and attendants to wear masks in all health care facilities; using tissues or handkerchiefs to cover the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing; frequently washing the hands and maintain hygiene; adhering to COVID appropriate behaviour when the symptoms are shown and undergoing self-isolation in addition to getting tested and treatment at the nearest health facility.
The advisory also cautioned against spitting randomly in crowded places; touching the eyes, nose and mouth without washing hands; consuming medicines not prescribed by the doctors; shaking hands or hugging and touching-contaminated places.
So far, around 260 people tested positive in the country in the last 24 hours, raising the total active cases to 7400.Nine new deaths were reported, tallying the total deaths from January 1 this year to 87 .
