SSUM urges Govt to halt affiliation for private schools without proper criteria

Imphal, March 14 2026:
The Socialist Students' Union of Manipur (SSUM) has strongly urged the Government to immediately stop granting affiliation and no-objection certificates to private schools that do not meet the necessary criteria.
SSUM president S Yaima stated that certain individuals are establishing schools in small rooms with minimal land solely for financial gain, a practice that has negatively impacted the- standard of education in the state.
The statements were made during the 11th Foundation Day celebration of SSUM and 6th State Level Painting Competition, held today at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Hall, Imphal.
During the event, S Yaima emphasized that schools are meant to produce responsible citizens, not serve as moneymaking ventures.
He called on the Government to take this matter seriously and ensure that affiliation from the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) and the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) is only granted to institutions with proper criteria and a clear vision.
He also highlighted concerns over colleges admitting students who don't attend classes but pass exams through unfair means.
Yaima further urged the Government to expedite improvements in Government school and college infrastructure, and implement the proposed waiver of hostel fees for relief camp students.
Kh Ashikumar, Secretary of COHSEM, who attended as the chief guest, stressed the need for holistic education and introducing innovative learning methods He also mentioned that the CBSE is introducing an openbook system on a trial basis, the effectiveness of which will be known in due course.
The painting competition, under the theme "Fight Against Evil", was divided into two categories: Class 5 to 8 and Class 9 to 12 .
In the first category, Sanahen Oinam from Pitambara English School won the 1 st position, Kh Joy Meitei and Kh Chandra Meitei from Wangkhei High School secured the 2nd & 3rd positions respectively.
In the second category, Brikrama Lourembam from Comprehensive School Oinam, Nongmaitherp Korounganba from Heritage Convent School, and Angela Heikrujam from KV Lamphel secured the 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions respectively.
Winners were awarded cash prizes along with certificates.
Seven students from each category also received consolation prizes.
Political activist Sapam Kangleipal, All Manipur Recognised Private School Welfare Association president Laishram Joy Khuman and National Teacher Awardee Kh Indrakumar also attended the event as dignitaries.
