Imphal, November 28 2023:
A 25-year-old survivor of Manipur ethnic violence reportedly committed suicide at a relief camp in Imphal East on November 25 .
Ningthoujam Ibomcha alias Romesh, son of Ningthoujam Basan of Sabungkhok Khunou was staying at Nongda relief camp under Lamlai Assembly Constituency.
He reportedly consumed brake oil and died as a result.
Family members said he was suffering from an illness and was feeling depressed as the family couldn't afford medical treatment.
The family had been taking shelter at different relief camps after they were forced out of their home due to the ethnic violence.
Four members of the family including Ibomcha got Rs 1000 each from the Government as assistance recently.
As soon as they got the money, they took Ibomcha to Raj Medicity for treatment.
However, the money the family members pooled together wasn't enough to buy medicine.
"After returning from the doctor, we cried and consoled each other," said her mother.
A few days later on November 25, his mother heard Ibomcha crying at night and found him struggling after consuming brake oil.
She immediately informed her husband, who was on guard duty at their native village Sabungkhok, over the phone.
Due to an incident at Sabungkhok Khunou, Ibomcha's father couldn't arrive at the relief camp in time.
"If only I had arrived a little early, we could have saved him," said Basan.
Sabungkhok Khunou is one of the vulnerable areas which have faced constant firing by Kuki militants.
