Awareness programme on organic foods held

Pakan Organic Farmers' Producer Company Limited, Chandel in association with Project Director of Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Chandel organised a two-day aWareness cum exhibition programme on Organic Products of Manipur' on the theme 'Let the consumer know' under Manipur Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCDNER) at Hnatham village in Chandel district.
The inaugural session of the two-day event (28-29 November) sponsored by state agriculture department was attended by Food Safety Officer, Chandel Dr Sh Wilson and Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) KVK, Chandel Ts Leenda Monsang as resource persons.
Dr Wilson spoke on the topic 'General Provisions of Food Safety and Standard Act 2006' and elaborated on Consumer Consciousness and Awareness: Product Information and Authentication' as well.
He encouraged the farmers in particular to produce organic food with nutritional and health benefits.
Ts Leenda spoke on the topic 'Significance of Organic Farming in Manipur' and urged farmers to work hard for producing more organic food products by depending on manual and natural fertilizers for the benefits of human health and society with a long term perspective.
Pakan Organic Food Producer's Company Ltd chairman Wl Robertson, in his key note address, mentioned that the focus of the programme is to educate farmers and consumers about the importance of organic farming, the nuances of food safety and management system, consumer rights, skill development, etc.
The programme was also attended by DAO Chandel Ts Gladney Monsang, Chandil Khullen village chief Ps Jumas, Ralchin Organic Food PC chairman Ps Monihring, Chandil Hnatham village assistant chief Kl Volhnim, Hnatham Baptist Church pastor Jamvol, Hnatham Baptist Church deacon Kl Kono and many farmers from Chandel district headquarters and neighbouring villages.
The farmers especially women members of selfhelp groups such as Komungpa SHG, Chiikur Veem Japhou SHG, Hnathambu SHG brought local organic vegetables from their fields perched near perennial Chakpi river and kitchen gardens for exhibition during the awareness cum exhibition event.
