Imphal, November 16 2023:
The Wildlife and Habitat Protection Society (WAHPS) has announced that it will carry out its annual fireline (Meiramhaiba) exercise at Punshilok, Langol Hill Range from November 17-23, 2023 .
According to a release issued by WAHPS, this is an annual voluntary effort by WAHPS members in order to prevent the Punshilok forest from wild or man-made fire in view of the impending dry season.
Fireline is made by creating a gap in the vegetation at a forest to prevent the conservation site from any approaching fire.
It may be mentioned that every year, forest fires engulf a large part of Langol Hill range.
Unfortunately the primary cause of fire reportedly originates from human misdeeds.
WAHPS shared that the reserved forest of Langol and Nongmaiching Hill ranges are the lungs of Imphal city and the two hill ranges play a pivotal role in purifying the polluted city air.
WAHPS also shared that conserving forest and wildlife should begin from the nearest reserved forest- Langol and Nongmaiching, especially for urban dwellers.
Considering the current law and order situation prevailing in the State, WAHPS further appealed to the public particularly the residents of Langol, Lamdeng and Eroishemba areas not to panic by the fireline activities and added that this exercise will be carried out by WAHPS as a part of Joint Forest Management activity.
