Meritorious students felicitated with Sangai Merit and IPC awards

Thirty meritorious students from villages surrounding Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park and habitat of the endangered Sangai deer, were felicitated with the Sangai Students Merit Award 2026 at a function held today at Laphupat Tera High School.

The award ceremony was organised by the Environment Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum under the initiative of the Park and Sanctuary Division, Forest Department Government of Manipur, with the objective of encouraging students and creating greater awareness and responsibility towards Sangai conservation.
The programme was attended by Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife and TP-1) L Joykumar, IFS; Deputy Conservator of Forest Park and Sanctuary Division, L Biramangol, IFS; retired Reader of DM College of Science and wildlife activist Dr Kh Shamungou; Headmaster of Laphupat Tera High School N Kumar; president of Environment Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum Dr N Yaima; and retired principal of Kumbi College K Jugeshor, among others.
As part of the programme, the dignitaries planted saplings within the school campus to promote environmental conservation.
A total of 30 students who secured more than 80 per cent marks in Class X and XII examinations conducted by BOSEM, COHSEM and CBSE were honoured with gifts in recognition of their academic achievements.
The awardees included 17 Class X students under BOSEM, two Class XII students under COHSEM, nine Class X students under CBSE and two Class XII students under CBSE.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Conservator of Forest L Joykumar said that the Sangai Merit Award ceremony has been organised since 2011 as an initiative of the Forest Department to spread awareness among students of villages surrounding Keibul Lamjao National Park and encourage them to take responsibility for the conservation of Sangai.
He expressed hope that the awardees and their families would spread awareness and develop greater love and concern for the endangered species, thereby strengthening conservation efforts.
He added that protecting the Sangai is also a way of preserving the culture and identity of Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Ideal Pioneer's Club (IPC), Kakching Ningthou Leikai, organised the IPC Meritorious-cum-Incentive Award Distribution Ceremony 2026 at Shri Shri Radha Krishna Mandop to honour outstanding students of Ningthou Leikai Ward No 8.The ceremony was organised with ex-MLA Thokchom Tomba, Caretaker Councillor Ward No.8 Moirangthem Inakkhunbi, retired Headmasters Moirangthem Mukunda and Pukhrambam Chaoba.

During the event 27 students who excelled in Class X and XII examinations conducted by BOSEM and COHSEM were felicitated for bringing pride to the locality.
A bodybuilder who represented the State in competitions and brought laurels was also honoured.
Besides students and sportspersons, 32 pioneer elders of the locality who contributed significantly to the growth and development of the club and construction of the club building were also felicitated for their valuable contributions.
