Imphal, April 22 2026:
Social activist Seram Neken has attributed the ongoing instability in Manipur to a profound lack of education and "national character" among the State's legislators.
Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for Class XII toppers from the Thongju AC, Neken emphasized that patriotism and sincerity are the bedrock of a civilized society.
He argued that professionals in any field- be they doctors, engineers, or politicians - cannot truly serve the Nation's interest without a deep-rooted sense of love for their people and land.
He said sincerity and patriotism are essential for quality professionals, adding that a civilised society needs good administrators, capable politicians, and competent professionals.
"Young students need to be trained and instilled with national character as part of their education so that they can be an important asset for the Nation", said Neken, who also serves as the general secretary and spokesperson of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
Neken issued a stinging critique of the State Government's handling of the academic sphere.
He noted that educational institutions have remained nonfunctional following the tragic massacre of two children and three agitators on April 7 .
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he remarked that even during global wars, education is typically spared.
In Manipur, however, he claimed the Government's utter negligence has left students unattended for an extended period, jeopardizing the future of the State's youth.
The event, held at Neken's residence, honored 15 outstanding students from the Thongju AC who secured top positions and highest marks (different subjects) in the Higher Secondary Examination 2026, conducted by COHSEM .
The achievers included:
Science Stream- Sunena Thokchom (5th position), Dhanista Nongmeikapam (7th), Kangujam Srinivas Mangang (18th), and Langlen Naoroibam (19th).Commerce Stream- Ningombam Sulochana Devi (5th position) .
Arts Stream- Pushpa Kakchingtabam (2nd position), Chabungbam Celi Devi (6th), and Sweety Laishram (7th).Subject toppers in Geography, Music, and Health and Physical Education were also recognized with mementos and cash prizes.
Neken concluded by stating that the responsibility for the State's survival against challenges like illegal immigration, deforestation, and drugs now rests heavily on the shoulders of the youth and the student community.
