The International Day of Food Loss and Waste was observed today at Monsang Pantha, Chandel, in the presence of village chief NG Vintson Monsang, villagers and officials from the Forest Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr N Munal Meitei, Divisional Forest Officer Chandel, stressed that the day, observed annually on September 29, aims to promote awareness and collective action to reduce food loss and waste worldwide.
He stated that one in every eleven people across the globe faces hunger, with the average individual wasting over 74 kilograms of food annually, accounting 60% of global households food consumption.
He further noted that such global food wastage contributes significantly to carbon emissions releasing about 10% of global carbon dioxide.

He further stressed the urgent need to improve cold storage facilities and encouraged people to practice composting, adopt vermi-compost methods, and scientifically manage waste in strict adherence to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing Sewa Parv initiative, which began from September 17 nationwide under the Nation's First @ 75 Campaign, a tree plantation drive was also held at Monsang Pantha village, where around 200 saplings were planted at the surrounding areas.
