Chandel, June 29 2026:
A one-day awareness programme on "Community Participation in Conservation of Forest Resources and Sustainable Livelihood" under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) was organised today at Purum Chumbang village in Chandel district.
The programme was organised by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Chandel, and attended by around 210 villagers.
The event began with a tree plantation drive.
The programme was attended by DFO Chandel Dr N Munal Meitei as chief guest, Khiang Donhra Chothe, Chief of Purum Chumbang village as functional president, along with N Deepa.
Range Forest Officer (RFO), Chandel; Rd David Boyes, Vice-President of Naga Hoho; and PS Ngamrung Anal, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Chandel, as guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Munal Meitei stressed the urgent need for collective action to address the growing environmental challenges faced by Manipur.
He said Green Manipur Day should be observed and transformed into a sustained movement, with every individual planting and nurturing at least 100 trees annually.
He cautioned that without firm commitment towards forest conservation, Manipur could face severe environmental consequences, making it difficult for future generations to sustain life in the state.
Dr Munal pointed out that the number of trees being planted, including through Forest Department initiatives, is very low compared to the rate of tree felling.
He called for a collective pledge and campaign to bridge the gap, emphasising that both hill and valley communities must come together for environmental protection.
He further informed that during the Van Mahotsav celebration scheduled from July 1 to 7, Chandel district has set a target of planting around 1.10 lakh saplings and sought public support and cooperation to achieve the goal.
He also announced that around 2.25 lakh saplings are planned to be distributed across the district this year at locations including Chandel, Komlathabi, Serou Lamkhai and Nungpan.
Speaking on the occasion, Rd David Boyes and PS Ngamrung Anal also highlighted the importance of preserving forests, protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable livelihoods through community participation.
