Imphal, April 19 2026:
The Manipur Peoples' Democratic Front (MPDF) has condemned the continuing cycle of violence in the State, citing recent killings in Tronglaobi and on the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
Addressing a press conference today at the Manipur Press Club, MPDF president S Samungou decried the April 7 bomb attack at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai that, killed two toddlers, and the alleged firing by CRPF personnel on protesters in which three more persons died.
He demanded the strictest disciplinary action against the CRPF personnel involved and a court of inquiry against the officer who ordered the firing.
Samungou also condemned the killing of two Nagas on the Imphal-Ukhrul road on April 18 by suspected Kuki militants.
He expressed concern that despite such incidents, the State Government has not taken adequate measures to prevent further escalation.
"The unrest, which began on May 3, 2023, shows no signs of abating and is harming Manipur's social fabric and stability", he added.
"The ongoing violence and the presence of armed Kuki militants across Manipur have created a state of fear.
This is a direct challenge to the Constitution of India", Samungou said.
The MPDF cited Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees protection of life and personal liberty, and argued that the Government's failure to control the violence amounts to a failure to uphold these fundamental rights.
The MPDF urged the State Government to take immediate, decisive action to stop the violence in Tronglaobi and other affected areas to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
