Workshop focuses on sustainable maize production in NE India

Imphal, February 19 2026:
A two-day workshop on "Sustainable and Climate Resilient Maize Production in Northeast India" commenced today at the auditorium of the College of Agriculture (CoA), Iroisemba.
The event, organised by AICRP on Maize, CoA, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, and sponsored by ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana, aims to enhance maize production in the region.
A total of 100 farmers and representatives of line departments are participating in the two-day workshop.
The inaugural programme was graced by dignitaries, including Dr LM Gamayak, Director of Research; Prof K Nandini Devi, Dean, CoA; Dr AK Singh, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CSSRI, Kamal; and Prof K Mamocha Singh, Head, Department of Entomology.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gamayak highlighted the critical role of maize production in boosting farmers' income and strengthening rural livelihoods.
He emphasized the crop's versatility and potential to uplift the agricultural economy, sharing success stories from Manipur and encouraging wider cultivation.
Prof Mamocha underlined maize's importance as a staple food in some Northeastern States and urged fanners to adopt improved and sustainable cultivation practices.
Dr AK Singh stressed the need for technological interventions to enhance productivity, including the development of affordable, high-quality seed varieties to meet rising demand.
Prof Nandini reinforced that "sustainability and climate resilience must now be the guiding principles of agricultural development", calling for a focus on climate-resilient varieties, conservation practices, and integrated management strategies.
As part of the programme, agricultural inputs were distributed to the participants.
