Imphal, August 28 2025:
An inquiry launched to investigate the case of five cops who allegedly took a bribe of lakhs of rupees to release drug smugglers has been completed, and the report has been submitted to the Porompat police station.
The five cops, who were suspended in the case in early August, include OC Imphal East Commando Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas, Sub Inspector B Debson Singh, Constable Tarique Aziz, Head Constable Md Rakib and Jemadar (7 MR) Md Amin Shah.
Sources said the inquiry revealed that the five personnel struck a Rs 26 lakh deal to release five drug smugglers they had detained.
Around midnight of August 5, cops detained one Thar vehicle at Mantripukhri area for illegal transportation of 12 soap cases containing drugs, and five smugglers including two men and three women.
The two male smugglers were identified as Md Akil Ahamed of Lilong Mairenkhul Makha Leikai and Shahrukh Khan, the driver, from Urup Khunou.
Shahrukh Khan was staying at Lilong.
The detained persons were then brought to the office of Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas, then Officer-in-Charge of Imphal East Commando.
A negotiation ensued and a deal was struck between the five detained persons and the Officer-in-Charge in consensus with the four other personnel who have now been suspended.
During the negotiation, it was agreed that a sum of Rs 26 lakh would be provided in exchange for releasing the detainees/drug dealers, revealed the inquiry.
There were serious procedural violations, unlawful release of detainees/drug dealers, unauthorized monetary transaction, bribery, abuse of official position by the suspended Inspector and four other personnel, revealed the inquiry.
It may be noted that SubInspector Beishamayum Debson of Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai was among 11 police commandos arrested in 2013 at Pallel for smuggling narcotic drugs including Pseudoephedrine tablets - worth Rs 3,64,02,000 in the international market.
The Government had also withdrawn Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry awarded to SI B Debson in 2020 after a student organisation flagged that the cop was arrested in the drug trafficking case in 2013 .
