Imphal, September 08 2025:
Eight years ago, on September 9, 2017, Pravish Chanam, an engineering student, went missing from a music concert venue in Uttar Pradesh.
Despite filing a missing report, his body was disposed of as an unclaimed body and justice remains elusive to this day.
Although the CBI has taken over the investigation to uncover what truly happened, the hope for justice in Pravish's family continues to fade.
His father, Jugindro, now finds himself caught in a whirlpool of thoughts on whether to file a petition before the Supreme Court to seek justice for his son, or remain silent and carry the unbearable weight of unanswered questions and grief.
As the 8th death anniversary of Pravish approaches, the Chanam family continues to question the treatment of people from the North East in mainland India.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Jugindro, a retired Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, said that the CBI has been unable to make progress in his son's case, despite investigating it since April 6, 2018.He said that he has been enduring the pain with the hope that justice would one day be served for his son -but that hope is fading.
Saying that he is considering filing a petition before the Manipur High Court and, if necessary, the Supreme Court, he said that he is also contemplating launching an agitation through the Peace Action Committee, which was formed in response to Pravish's death.
Jugindro, with a heavy heart, also said that at times he considers remaining silent.
Saying that the Uttar Pradesh police disposed of his son's body on September 13, 2017 despite filing a missing report with a photo in advance, he added that the way mainland Indians treat people from the North East is disheartening.
He said that they had even met the then Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, but no positive outcome came from it Even though the UP police claimed his son was hit by a vehicle, the marks on his face suggest otherwise, according to experts, he said.
Jugindro also said that the CBI contacted him three times, asking to drop the case, claiming no suspicious elements were found - despite the case being registered at the Ghaziabad Special Judicial Court.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 17, he said and added that he will determine his next course of action after that.
He said that his son went missing after handing over his phone and wallet to a friend at a music concert venue in Greater Noida, only to be found unconscious on a road some distance away from the venue.
Jugindro claimed that after his son was taken to BR Ambedkar Hospital, CCTV footage showed him moving around in his room at around 6.30 am of September 9.He said that his son, who was fine in the morning, was found dead by the evening of the same day.
