TDC seeks more security convoys

Imphal, July 07 2026:
The Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC) has written to Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam asking for more security convoys to escort vehicles on National Highway-37 .
In its representation, the TDC urged the Home Minister to provide 2 additional companies of CRPF and increase the number of companies engaged in escort duty to 10 .
Increasing the number of companies will make available more convoys for escort duty and also provide appropriate rest time to the security personnel, said the TDC .
It also urged the Home Minister to arrange and provide 16 new light vehicles for increasing the number of convoys.

The council's request came at a time when the number of security convoys escorting vehicles has been reduced, leading to more vehicles being stranded at Jiribam and neighbouring places in Assam.
Sources said the DGP requested the CRPF three convoys today, but only two were arranged.
As many as 502 empty vehicles bound for Jiribam are stranded along several stretches of the highway unable to reach Jiribam.
The security convoys and the empty trucks and tankers are stuck at Shanti- khunou, Barak, Nungba and Khongshang due to poor condition of the road.
As the two security convoys are unable to reach Jiribam today, there may not be any security convoy available to escort loaded trucks and tankers from Jiribam to Imphal, said sources.
While 286 loaded vehicles which left Jiribam on Monday reached Imphal today, 150 loaded vehicles which left Jiribam today have reached Noney.
Speaking to this paper, drivers said dilapidated condition of the road and poor execution of repair work have caused vehicles to be stranded for longer periods on the road, and increased travel time.
While minor landslides at several stretches have deposited debris on the road, the NHIDCL and the agencies it is engaging have failed to clear them in time and properly, asserted the drivers.
"The NHIDCL is not clearing the whole of the road.
It is clearing only a single lane, and this has caused vehicles to wait hours for others to pass," said the drivers.
The NHIDCL, they claimed, has not repaired the road properly.
Some of the repaired sections have been damaged again due to lack of quality, they asserted.
They also opined that the NHIDCL and agencies it is engaging are yet to deploy adequate machinery and manpower to repair the road properly.
