Steps on to modernize zoo: PCCF

Additional Chief Secretary Anurag Bajpai, who also serves as Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HoFF), has announced that the Government is working to modernize the Manipur Zoological Garden located at Iroisemba.
He made the announcement during the 49th foundation day celebration of the Manipur Zoological Garden and the opening of the 71st Wildlife Week Celebration 2025 held under the theme "Human-Animal Coexistence" today.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Anurag said that the Manipur Zoological Garden is recognized as a medium-sized zoo by the Central Zoo Authority despite its relatively small size.
He also said that the Manipur Zoological Garden is home to several scheduled animals.
Saying that the zoo, however, is often flooded when there is rainfall because it is situated in a low-lying area, he added that the Government is working to modernize the zoo.
The PCCF emphasized the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation, urging students and the public to play an active role in safeguarding wildlife and their habitats.
Stating that hunting or killing wildlife is a punishable offence, he urged the public to report any instances of wildlife poaching or killing to the police or Forest Department.
Anurag emphasized that the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Indian Constitution clearly mandates the protection and safeguarding of wildlife, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts.
The PCCF, meanwhile, stated that the Wildlife Week, which commenced today, will feature a range of activities such as quiz and essay competitions and awareness programmes across the State, aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
He said that the closing ceremony will be held at the City Convention Centre on October 8.Bajpai added that the Forest Department was able to collect about Rs 45 crore in 2024-2025, adding to the coffer of the State.
Prizes were distributed for the painting competition held at Manipur Zoological Garden on September 28.The programme was also attended by Chief Conservator of Forests/Wildlife L Joykumar Singh, DCF/Park and Sanctuary Amit Kaler, Director of Manipur Zoological Garden L Biramangol Singh and DFO/Wildlife Th Autum Meitei among others.
