Thoubal, August 02 2025:
The Joint Action Committee, formed in connection with the death of a mother post delivery at District Hospital Thoubal, has called a 48-hour general strike in the district from the midnight of August 3 till August 5 midnight.
The decision to call the general strike was taken following the Government's failure to take action on its demands, said the JAC .
Already a mother of a 3-year-old boy, the woman, Maibam Samita Devi (32), died hours after giving birth to a baby boy at the District Hospital Thoubal on July 28 .
She was the wife of Maibam Ajit of Tekcham Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district.
Family members and the JAC had blamed the hospital for the death, and accused its doctors and nurses of negligence.
Speaking to media persons at the office of the Standard Library Cum Youth Organisation (SLYO) at Tekcham Mayai Leikai today, JAC convenor Soibam Jemson said the decision to call general strike was taken as a result of the authorities' failure to act on the demands of the JAC.
Notably, the JAC had demanded the Government authorities to initiate an enquiry and terminate the services of the doctors, nurses and staff responsible for the death of the mother.
It had demanded the Government to compensate the victim's family and take responsibility for the two surviving children of the deceased.
The JAC has also refused to claim the body of the deceased until actions are taken on its demands.
So far, the Government authorities have not acted on the demands of the JAC and the family members.
Therefore, a decision has been taken to call a 48-hour general strike in Thoubal district from the midnight of August 3 to midnight of August 5, he said.
Samita died because of dereliction of duties by the doctors and nurses of the District Hospital Thoubal.
The doctors and nurses responsible for the death deserve punishment according to law.
Appropriate action must be taken against the staff who were on duty on the day, he added.
Emergency services related to healthcare, water and electricity, and religious rituals will be exempted from the purview of the general strike, he said.
