Imphal/Delhi, August 31 2025:
IMPHAL, Aug 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Manipur in the second week of September, his first trip to the State since ethnic violence erupted over two years ago, according to News 18.This development coincides with earlier an report by The Sangai Express on August 26, which suggested a possible visit of the Prime Minister contingent on the progress in the Centre's efforts to facilitate free movement on highways and extend the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
Notably, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh, had also instructed all Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Commanding Officers (COs) of MR and IRB to not grant any leave to police officers and personnel from September 7 to 14 except on extreme emergencies.
However, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba clarified that there is no official confirmation on the Prime Minister's visit to Manipur anytime soon, despite reports in various National media outlets suggesting a possible visit.
Sources told CNN-News18 that the visit is expected to coincide with his scheduled programme in Mizoram on September 13, where he will inaugurate a new railway line.
They added that the Manipur leg is still under discussion and could take place either on September 12 or 13 .
"The Mizoram programme is confirmed.
The Manipur part is still being considered," one senior official said.
If the Manipur trip is confirmed, sources said the Prime Minister's visit is expected to last around four hours.
He is likely to tour both Meitei and Kuki-dominated areas and hold meetings with senior officials during the brief stop.
A visit to Manipur would carry major political and symbolic significance, as the Prime Minister has not visited the State since the outbreak of unrest in May 2023.If confirmed, the trip is expected to be brief and primarily focused on official meetings.
Officials noted that the situation in Manipur has remained largely peaceful in recent months.
Security forces continue to be deployed in strength, but incidents of violence have dropped sharply.
Normalcy is gradually returning, with schools and markets reopening and displaced families beginning to go back home.
"The situation is calm and under control.
People are trying to move on from the violence," a senior Manipur official said.
Government sources also pointed out that ongoing peace-building initiatives and community dialogues have helped ease tensions in the State.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said he has also seen media reports about a possible Prime Minister's visit, but he cannot confirm whether the visit will happen or not.
Responding to a media query on the sidelines of the National Sports Day event held at the Palace Compound today, Sanajaoba added that Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar was earlier expected to visit Manipur, but the visit didn't materialize.
To another query, the MP said that the people of Manipur also desire the formation of a popular Govt, but he found it difficult to comment when the Government would be formed.
However, he expressed his belief that a popular Government would soon be formed in Manipur, noting that delays wouldn't be beneficial given the upcoming State Assembly elections in 2027 .
