Imphal turns spotlight on youth, prevention on Anti-Drug Day

Imphal, June 25 2026:
Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, two major awareness programmes were held in Imphal on Thursday to reinforce the call for a drug-free society.
At the 2nd Battalion Manipur Rifles, a day-long programme presided over by Commandant Sarangthem Asana, drew over 200 participants, including 2nd MR and NDRF personnel, students, and teachers of 2nd MR School.
Resource persons Montu Ahanthem, secretary, Wide Angle, and Dr Wakambam Joyson, Deputy Director, MACS, highlighted regional drug challenges, risks of HIV among injecting users, and the shift from punitive approaches to evidence-based harm reduction.
Sheikh Muhammed Hussain Ahmed, Assistant Commandant, 2nd MR, outlined key provisions of the NDPS Act.
The event concluded with a collective pledge to promote prevention, treatment, and community support.
Separately, the 6th India Reserve Battalion, Pangei, in collaboration with the District Level Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Committee, Imphal East, organised a programme at Hundred Flowers Higher Secondary School, Khomidok, under the theme "Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan- Vikshit Bharat Ki Pehchaan".
Attended by Commandant Dr S Ibomcha Singh, Kripa Foundation project director Ksh Jibanmala Devi, and District Social Welfare Officer Imphal East W Thamabati Devi, speakers stressed youth awareness and healthy lifestyles.
Participants took a pledge and joined a mass rally to Khurai Heikru Makhong, carrying posters against drug abuse.
Both events saw strong participation, underscoring shared resolve for a healthier, drug-free Manipur.
