Ukhrul, July 14 2026:
The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has demanded the immediate release of four villagers from Sharkaphung (Sikibung) village in Kamjong district alleging they were detained during a joint security operation on Tuesday, and warned of serious civil unrest if they are not released within 24 hours.
In a press communique, the TNL Working Committee strongly condemned the combing operation reportedly conducted by a joint team of Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, and personnel of the Punjab, Madras and Bihar Regiments in the Tangkhul Naga villages of TM Kasom, Sharkaphung and Lungphu.
The committee alleged that four residents of Sharkaphung - Wungphayo Kasar (24), AS Ninglum (29), Yaoreingam Lungleng (24) and Vareiyo Lungleng (56) - were picked up by security personnel between 8 am and 9 am.
It further claimed that the whereabouts of the four remained unknown at the time of issuing the statement.
The TNL Working Committee further alleged that the security operation targeted Tangkhul Naga villages, including TM Kasom and Sharkaphung, which it claimed have been facing repeated attacks by "Kuki militants under the SoO pact and Kuki narco-terrorist groups" since the outbreak of violence in Ukhrul district on February 7, 2026, It also alleged that the Kuki villages it described as the epicentres of the violence in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts had remained untouched by security forces.
Warning of the possible consequences of the operation, the committee said the alleged excesses by the security forces could aggravate the prevailing situation and lead to serious ramifications.
It demanded that the four detained villagers be released within 24 hours, failing which it warned that the issue could trigger widespread civil unrest against the State Government.
