Imphal, June 12 2025:
Facing prolonged neglect from the state government, three Meetei police personnel including two ASIs posted at Moreh police station ran away from the station.
They were later caught and brought back to the PS.
According to a report, Moreh PS used to have around 40-45 Meetei personnel on posting.
After the conflict broke out on May 3, 2023, the personnel were gradually transferred or refused to return to the PS after returning to Imphal.
As such, there are only three Meetei personnel left at the PS at present.
Although the personnel are to be transferred every three months, no replacement had been sent for the three personnel for around six months.
The lack of access to the highway due to the conflict and inability to be with their families even during medical or financial emergencies, prompted the three personnel to leave the station on Thursday morning without authorisation.
On receiving reports that the three personnel had left the PS, teams were mobilised to track them with the one of the personnel traced to the Key Location Post (KLP) of Assam Rifles by a team of Moreh PS, while the two ASIs remained missing.
A combined team of Tengnoupal district police, Moreh PS and central security forces launched operation to locate the missing duo.
Strict security measures were also taken up by AR along the border and search operations carried out in suspected locations.
Later, the two ASIs were found hiding in a house at Moreh town and brought back to the PS.
Due to the conflict, many Kuki personnel posted at the PS had left but after the conflict subsided a bit, they were called back by their acquaintances based in Moreh.
As such, most of the Kuki personnel had returned to border town.
Meanwhile, the Meetei personnel, who had left the PS during the conflict, had no one to call them back and the authority concerned also did not pay attention to their plight.
Thus, none of them returned to the border town.
The government, in the interest of the personnel, had initially seen to the transfer and posting of personnel every three months.
However, the delay in overseeing the matter and sending replacements, led many of the personnel to face huge inconveniences.
Furthermore, the former CM Biren-led government had announced financial assistance of Rs 3000-5000 for the personnel.
The personnel, however, have not received any such aid even after the announcement.
In addition, the Meetei residents of Moreh have been unable to return to their homes in the border town after the conflict broke out.
There is huge concern on whether anyone from the Meetei community would ever be able to return to Moreh.
There are no Meetei staff in any of the government offices, while the non-return of those who left the police station, have sparked fears.
If the government had deployed the required strength of personnel and also seen to timely transfer-posting, the matter would not have reached the presentsituation.
Thus, many have urged the government and the authority concerned to look into the matter at the earliest.
