Imphal, January 12 2026:
Questions of ethnic identity, ancient history and shared folklore took centre stage during the observance of Anal Phetha Ni Alum 2026, held on Monday at Anal Khullen village in Chandel district, as speakers emphatically traced the lineage and historical legacy of the Anal community.
Addressing the gathering, former MLA of 41-Chandel (ST) Assembly Constituency, St Victor Nunghlung asserted that the Anal community is purely Naga by blood and history," rejecting narratives that associate the Anal with Old Kuki origins.
He stated that the Anal community existed more than 10,000 years before the immigration of Kukis in Manipur.
Recalling an ancient legend, Victor highlighted a folklore involving the Meitei deity Ebuthou Wangbarel.
According to the narrative, the deity, in human form, challenged Anal warriors to a massive rock-throwing contest to prove his love for a woman from the Anal community, who was believed to be a deity in disguise.
He noted that the historic rock associated with the legend still exists at Anal Khullen, the venue of the celebration.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr BD Thumdal, convenor of the Souvenir Committee, who traced the evolution of Phetha Ni Alum.
He recalled that the birthday of Chieftain Bangjampa was first celebrated on January 12,1953, and later evolved into Phetha Ni Alam in 1998 to honour legendary Anal heroes.
He highlighted that Thumkhel, Volhlung, Teshung and Pashel Kumthu occupy the highest position in Anal history as legendary figures who defended Anal people and territories against invading forces, extending their expeditions into presentday Myanmar and the Manipur kingdom, underscoring the historical dominance and bravery of the Anal community.
He further informed that the Anta Assembly, on October 8, 2025, approved the induction of nine notable regional (local) heroes as Junior Notable Regional Heroes.
The inductees include Seltun Thulring, Ruwngtol Koko, Kanthuwin Kolo, Runlel Kashol, Sinruwng Bera, Jasha Lumiong Ruwngtol Tothar, Sengal Movol and Shungthu Khatter.
