Imphal, December 04 2023:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Chairperson UB Saha has said that there will be no humanity in the society if people do not live above the community and religion line.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a debate competition held today in connection with International Human Rights Week observation at the Maharaja Bodhchandra College, Palace Compound on the topic "Protection of Human Rights depends on the rule of law in times of Communal Disharmony" .
The Chairperson continued that a community, culture or religion cannot be affected at any cost as the Freedom of Religion is a fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution of India.
"However, there would be no humanity in the society, if we go on fighting each other for community, religion, caste and sex.
Hence, we should live above the community and religion line to prove that we all are human", he added.
He also said that human society is always in disorder as the conflicts keep on happening in different parts of the world.
While stressing on the importance of protecting human rights, UB Saha maintained that human rights of all the citizens, be it children, students, men or women must be ensured.
He also expressed concern that violation of human rights is happening in the social sphere and the rights of the citizens are not fully protected in the day to day life even though the United Nations has been advocating for the protection of human rights besides the country enacting the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 .
Noting that knowing human rights is very important for all, the MHRC Chairman asserted that many people have even failed to reap the benefits of Governmental schemes as they are not aware of their rights.
Highlighting that many rights, including the Right to Education and Right to Live with Human Dignity have come under the purview of human rights, UB Saha said, "There was a recent case where 96 students were not allowed to seat in a board examination on the charge of not submitting their form fill up in time without informing the students about the form fill up.
The students were later allowed to sit in the examination after the MHRC took up a suo-moto case" .
He also asked the students to know about human rights and stand up if their rights have been violated in any manner.
Delivering the presidential address, MHRC Member Kangjam Khagendra Singh shared that human rights cannot be protected if there is no rule of law in a State or Country.
He conveyed that the MHRC has disposed of 491 cases out of the total 606 cases in the last 10 months.
"The cases include killing of a mother and a daughter at Phayeng five years ago and the killing of a citizen by a cop", said Khagendra while expressing contentment that the Commission has successfully delivered justice to at least some of the victims in the State.
The function was also attended by Commissioner (Law), Government of Manipur Nungshithoi Athokpam, High Court Bar Association of Manipur president Yumnam Nirmolchand and MHRC Secretary Haobam Roshita as the guest of honors.
