Imphal, December 04 2023:
Maintaining that unfailing protection to the citizens cannot be guaranteed until the students fully understand human rights, Manipur State Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairman Justice UB Saha has stressed the need to educate the students on issues pertaining to human rights.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function of debating competition for class IX to XII students organised by MHRC as part of the International Human Rights Week observance, at the multipurpose hall of Maharaja Bodhchandra College, Palace Compound, here, on Monday, Justice Saha informed that the debating competition is organised with the primary objective of imparting education on human rights to students as they are the future pillars of the society.
He said that since many people are not adept about human rights, they are not aware of whether or not they are actually enjoying their rights.
Therefore, there is the need to understand the rights of all citizens as enshrined under the Constitution of India and made aware of whom to approach when our rights are denied or violated.
UB Saha also said that unless the students understand human rights, there can be no guarantee that citizens would get full protection.
If the students do not understand human rights, protection of human rights cannot be guaranteed, he maintained.
Presided over by MHRC member Kangjam Khagendra, the event was also attended by commissioner (law) Nungshitombi Athokpam and High Court Bar Association president Yumnam Nirmolchand as guests of honour.
