Maharaja Kulachandra's legacy honoured on 92nd death anniversary

The 92nd death anniversary of Maharaja Kulachandra was observed today at JN Manipuri Dance Academy auditorium in Imphal.
The event was jointly organised by the Justice Committee on Anglo Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs, Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur), and Ningthemcha Ningsing Lup.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Khumukcham Joykisan, MLA, Thangmeiband AC; Joychandra Konthoujam, chairman, Justice Committee on Anglo Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs; Prof Naorem Joykumar, Vice Chancellor, Khongnangthaba University; Dr Yumnam Premananda, Head, Department of Law and Director, Centre for Human Rights, Manipur University; and Rajkumar Ningthemsana, great grandson of Maharaja Kulachandra.
Speaking on the occasion, Joychandra Konthoujam highlighted the bravery of Manipuri people during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri war, saying they showed the world their refusal to be subservient.
He appealed to the Government to install Maharaja Kulachandra's statue at Kangla, develop war memorial sites related to the Silchar, Kohima, and Tammu columns of the war, and recognise April 27, 1891, as a significant day in State history.
Konthoujam also addressed contemporary issues, demanding the immediate cessation of illegal road and 'godown' taxes being collected on National and State Highways in the hill districts of Manipur.
The event underscored the historical significance of the war and its relevance to contemporary issues.
The gathering paid floral tributes to the Maharaja and other freedom fighters during the observance.
