Media sensitisation workshop on sanitation held

College Development Council of Manipur University in collaboration with Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD) Department organised a one-day media sensitisation workshop on 'My Waste, My Responsibility' at the Committee Room of the University on Thursday.
Speaking as the chief guest, MU VC Prof Naorem Lokendra Singh noted that conditions of sanitation in India have drastically changed under the Swachh Bharat Mission in a very short period of time.
Previously, open defecation was practiced en-masse but with the implementation of Swachh Bharat Campaign, India is globally recognised for successfully controlling such unhygienic practices.
In Manipur also, various Central sponsored schemes related with cleanliness and proper hygiene are already implemented in different areas.
The university has also been organising many awareness related programmes and meetings with an objective to come up with a presentable level whereas, though the goal is yet to be achieved, he added.
The VC highlighted that Manipur was known for its cleanliness in the past but due to changes in socio-cultural characteristics, many changes have been witnessed in recent years.
In order to scoop up such changes for hygienic lifestyle, he opted for inclusion of syllabus in all academic lessons.
Presiding over the workshop, IPR & MAHUD director Ngangom Uttam Singh said that since media persons have a very tight and busy schedule, it will not be right to confine them for the whole day so he opted to organise such workshops on a series basis.
The director, while emphasising more on solid waste management, stressed the importance of collective effort to reduce the cost of solid waste management.
There are various challenges in maintaining cleanliness in all 25 towns of the state.
"In order to achieve our goal, we should never forget our contributions henceforth, such a workshop "My Waste, My Responsibility" is being organised," he added.
Uttam further mentioned that installation of Dust Bins intensifies scattering of garbage and urged every household to instead segregate their wastes, so as to achieve the goal.
He affirmed that various technologies, methods, machinery and techniques are being installed and implemented to achieve the targeted goal, while urging the general public to accustom with the ideology of "Reduce, Re-use and Re-cycle" .
Directorate of Environment and Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar Singh attended the workshop as guest of honour, which was also participated by scholars, faculties, students of Manipur University as well as media persons of various media houses.
The programme concluded with an interaction between the media persons and experts .
