KYC, AAP Manipur commemorate 200 years of Treaty of Yandabo

Kanglei Yelhou Cheingak (KYC) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Manipur separately observed "200 Years of Treaty of Yandabo" today.
KYC observed 200 years of the signing of the Treaty of Yandabo today at Hindi Parishad at Old Assembly Road.
Notable dignitaries present at the ceremony include Professor S Lanchenba Meetei, Dean, School of Humanities, DM University; Nongthombam Sanahal Singh, president, KYC; Ningombam Hemantakumar, editor, Wayel Kati; Oinam Inaocha Devi, president, Apunba Manipur Ema and civil rights activist Ningthoukhongjam Thanil as the chief guest, functional president and guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Nongthombam Sanahal Singh said that the peace agreement was signed on February 24, 1826 between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Ava (Burma).
Main provisions of the Treaty include the Burmese ceding the territories of Assam, Manipur, Arakan (Rakhine) and Tenasserim to the British; paying an indemnity of one million pounds sterling in four instalments; accept a British resident at the Burmese Court and most importantly Burma formally recognised the Manipur's independence.
The Treaty brought palpable transformation in South Asia.
As for Manipur, the Treaty of Yandabo is a symbol of liberation and sovereignty, he maintained.

Manipur's commemoration ceremony was accompanied by a grand welcome ceremony of Asheibam Bele Singh, former Independent candidate Andro AC and held at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.
The event was graced by W Nabakumar Singh, retd Professor, Manipur University; Dr Puyam Rakesh, independent researcher and Bishwanath Thingnam, State Coordinator, AAP Manipur as the presidium members.
At the event, Bishwanath Thingnam highlighted February 24 as a historic day for Manipur which marks the signing of the Treaty of Yandabo bringing an end to the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826) .
He spoke about the plight of the IDPs and the external threats to Manipur's territorial integrity.
It is imperative to preserve Manipur's unity and integrity in the interest of the State's future generations, he added.
